High-precision mirrors thanks to ULTRACUT® technology

To create a reflective surface, the roughness of the surface must be reduced to a minimum. Our mirrors achieve an extremely smooth surface where the difference in height between the highest peaks and the deepest valleys is only 2 nm on average (0.00002 mm).

We achieve this exceptional standard by using the innovative ULTRACUT® technology.

This machining method uses ultra-fine, monocrystalline diamonds that remove precise layers of material. The machine works with non-contact spindles and axes mounted in air cushions to ensure maximum stability.

Even the smallest vibrations could affect the quality of the mirror surface. This is why the processing machine stands on a granite bed weighing several tons, which is mounted on dynamically controlled air cushions. These air cushions are in turn installed on a specially decoupled hall floor to eliminate any external vibrations and ensure a flawless mirror
surface.

Innovative coating of the mirror surface

Developing a protective coating on milled mirror surfaces that does not impair the optical properties presented us with a major challenge. After four years of intensive research and thousands of tests, we achieved a breakthrough together with the Fraunhofer IFAM. Not only have we perfected the coating process, we have also developed the necessary
equipment and machines.

The durable sealing of our mirror surfaces - resistant to UV radiation, weathering and abrasion - takes place in a high-precision plasma process. The mirrors are placed in a reactor under vacuum in which a plasma is ignited. In a one-hour process, a glass-like polymer layer just 3 µm thick, enriched with SiO₂ particles, is deposited evenly on the mirror surface.

Thanks to this innovative technology, the optical properties of the mirrors remain unaffected, while at the same time highly effective protection is guaranteed.

Precision and expertise - Made in Germany

The production of each individual mirror requires 97 precise processing steps and takes 72 minutes. The mirror bodies are manufactured from solid aluminum using state-of-the-art CNC technology. During the process, more than 85% of the aluminum used is converted into chips and then recycled.

Every step of the production process is carried out manually by highly qualified specialists. Setting up the ultra-precise milling machines for the mirror surfaces, CO₂ dry ice cleaning before coating and monitoring the PE-CVD coating process require years of experience and in-depth expertise.

To ensure the highest possible control over the manufacturing process and product quality, we have made a conscious decision to produce in Berlin. Here, we combine technological innovation with the expertise of our team to produce mirrors of the highest precision and quality.
